Triggerfishes are such amazing animals, and they sure do like to eat. Brine shrimp are actually not a terribly nutritous meal for your trigger, especially if that’s all it’s eating. Your triggerfish will appreciate meaty treats such as table shrimp (shell on), pieces of scallops, fish, clams (open the shell, but leave the clam in the shell), and mussels. I like to only use marine flesh when feeding marine species.

When feeding raw table seafood, it is a good idea to briefly microwave it, steam it or freeze it. while this detracts somewhat from the nutritional value, it generally eliminates the possibility of parasites being passed on to your triggerfish. I often soak my food in a supplement like Selcon before feeding.

I either drop the clam on the substrate for the trigger to go after, or I feed with a feeding stick (a lot of aquarists hand feed their triggers, but this can result in a really nasty wound). I feed three times a day.

You can also use a prepared frozen food that is a meat based trigger formula.

I hope that helps. Triggers are amazing fish, but they are eaters! Make sure you have the filtration capacity to keep up with their eating.

Red Talb is correct, Triggerfishes are voracious eaters, they’ll keep eating if you feed them all day long. They are more of a meat eating fish (Carnivore). They’ll even eat other fishes, so if you do have peaceful fishes in your tank, keep a close eye on the Triggerfish, because I used to have Triggerfish and it was a Picasso, one day everything is fine and when it turned to night, I find one of my fishes eye is missing.

Then I see the trigger being very aggressive towards it’s mate and attacking them. So make sure that they have plenty to eat especially meaty foods. Brine shrimp will not be enough to satisfy the Triggerfish.

I hope that this information along with Red Talb’s is enough to satisfy you. Good luck.
